After over 50 years in the industry, Richard Smart is one of Australia’s most experienced book publishers. He started with the then Australian Consolidated Press-owned Frederick Muller in 1961, and joined Ure Smith, one of Australia’s oldest book publishing companies, as managing editor in 1966. After working in the UK with USA publisher, Van Nostrand Reinhold, in 1975 he founded Richard Smart Publishing which he has run on a part- or full-time basis since. In 1978 he was appointed managing editor at Angus & Robertson before joining William Collins (Australia) as publisher in 1982. He moved in 1986 to Macmillan (Australia), and then in 1989 was appointed ABC Books’ first publisher of books and audio tapes. He resumed full-time activity with his own business in 1994, offering a range of publishing services to his clients in a range of subjects. In 2000 he was appointed publisher at CHOICE Books, the book publishing arm of the Australian Consumers’ Association. He returned to RSP in 2004, acting as consultant publisher for CHOICE Books and then for ABC Books, publishing or co-publishing his own list, and also providing project management or packaging books for various publishers.

He was a member of the Australian Publishers’ Association training committee for over ten years and a founding member of Publish Australia, the Australian independent publishers’ group. From 2002 to 2010 he was a director of the Australian Publishers’ Association and convenor of the independent publisher’s committee. He is now consultant publisher for the Association and is editor of their book, An Introduction to Australian Book Publishing. He has been a member of the Australia Council’s assessment panel for their Literature International Market Development program.
